The Sioux Falls Conference Outfit I Packed This Trip

Conference days are some of the longest days I dress for.

You’re up early, navigating hotel coffee, sitting through sessions, walking between meeting rooms, networking with people you’ve only ever met on Zoom, and usually ending the day at dinner. By the time the day is over, you’ve been wearing the same outfit for ten or twelve hours.

The last thing I want is to spend that entire day adjusting my clothes.

For this trip to Sioux Falls, I packed a simple formula I’ve come back to repeatedly: a statement top, a comfortable black pant, one pair of heels, and a few polished accessories.

It looks put together without requiring much thought—which is exactly what I want when I’m traveling for work.

The shirt is from Commense and immediately caught my eye because it already does most of the work for me. The striped front panel adds interest, the tie-waist creates shape, and suddenly a simple pair of black pants feels much more intentional. It’s one of those pieces that looks like you put more effort into your outfit than you actually did.

For the pants, I packed the SPANXsupersmooth® Stretch Twill Wide Leg Pant.

If you’ve read Looks More Expensive for any length of time, you already know I appreciate clothing that can survive real life. Conference days involve a lot of sitting, a lot of walking, and usually at least one freezing conference room. These pants are comfortable enough to wear all day while still looking polished and professional.

They’re also easy to pack, which is always a bonus.

The shoes were my black leather Sam Edelman Hazel pumps. I could probably write an entire post about why I continue reaching for these heels. They work with almost everything, they instantly elevate an outfit, and one pair is usually enough to get me through an entire conference trip.

And because I firmly believe the small details often make the biggest difference, I finished the outfit with a pair of emerald-cut cubic zirconia stud earrings from Italo Jewelry.

Nothing dramatic. Nothing complicated.

Just enough sparkle to make everything feel finished.

What I liked most about this outfit was that it felt balanced. The wide-leg pants create movement, the shirt provides shape, and the accessories add polish without competing for attention.

More importantly, it allowed me to stop thinking about what I was wearing.

And honestly, that’s usually my goal when I travel for work.

The best conference outfits aren’t necessarily the most fashionable ones.

They’re the ones that let you focus on the conference instead of your clothes. -LME
