How I Pack Carry-On Only for Conferences

After enough conferences, I realized I wear the same formula almost every trip.

One carry-on.
One airport outfit.
One pair of heels.
A few statement tops.
Black pants that work with everything.

The less I pack, the more polished I usually feel.

My Conference Packing Formula

I pack around individual pieces instead of full outfits.

Most conference trips look something like this:

Everything has to coordinate easily, steam quickly, and feel effortless to wear after long days.

If I have to overthink it while packing, it usually stays home.

The Bamboo Sleep Set I Always Bring

I never travel without my bamboo sleep sets - a tank and boyshorts.

They’re lightweight, soft, breathable, and take up almost no room in a carry-on. Conference hotels are never predictable, and bamboo fabric somehow always feels comfortable regardless of the temperature.

After a full day of sessions, networking, airports, and hotel air conditioning, changing into something comfortable makes a bigger difference than people realize.

It’s one of the few things I pack every single trip without question.

My Conference Outfit Strategy

I stopped packing complete outfits years ago.

Now I pack around statement tops instead.

I keep the base simple with black pants, which makes the entire suitcase feel more flexible and cohesive. Then I rotate elevated tops throughout the trip:

They always feel polished without trying too hard.

And because everything stays within the same neutral palette, getting dressed in the morning becomes incredibly simple.

My Airport Outfit Formula

My airport outfit is usually some variation of:

Comfort matters when you spend hours in airports, but structure matters too.

A tailored layer instantly makes the entire outfit feel more intentional — even with leggings.

The Only Heels I Pack

For shorter conference trips, I usually only bring one pair of heels: my black Sam Edelman Hazel pumps.

They work with every outfit I pack, which means I never waste carry-on space bringing extra pairs “just in case.”

One pair. Packed every time.

What Packing Light Has Taught Me

The older I get, the more I realize thoughtful packing has very little to do with bringing more.

It’s about bringing the right things.

Elevated pieces. Real life. -LME
