The Travel Toiletry Bag I’ve Perfected After Years of Flying
At some point, I got tired of standing in my bathroom the night before every trip trying to remember whether I had packed toothpaste.
Or my toothbrush.
Or my medications.
Or whatever random thing I wouldn’t realize I forgot until I got to the hotel.
If you’ve traveled much for work, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.
There was a time when every trip started with me pulling products out of drawers, checking lists, repacking bags, and generally wondering what I was forgetting.
Eventually, I got tired of it.
So I stopped packing toiletries.
Well—not literally.
I created a dedicated travel toiletry bag that stays packed year-round.
And honestly, it’s one of the best travel systems I’ve ever put together.
I don’t enjoy packing.
I enjoy being packed.
The goal is to be able to grab my bag, throw it into my suitcase, and walk out the door knowing everything I need is already there.
After years of conferences, airport mornings, hotel rooms, delayed flights, and work trips, this system has become one of the simplest ways I reduce travel stress.
My Two-Compartment System
I’ve carried the same two-compartment TUMI toiletry bag for years. They don’t make this exact version anymore, but I’ve never found a setup I like better. I did find a similar one on Amazon that gets good reviews.
The top compartment holds my travel essentials and little extras.
The bottom compartment holds the makeup products I actually use.
Keeping everything separated means I’m not digging through one giant cosmetic bag while half awake in a hotel bathroom at six in the morning trying to find my toothbrush.
Top Compartment: Travel Essentials + Extras
The top section is reserved for the practical items that make travel easier.
A few permanent residents include:
Medications
The Aquasonic toothbrush has become one of my favorite travel purchases. One of the things I like most about it is that it doesn’t have a lot of little nooks and crannies where moisture can collect the way some electric toothbrushes do. The brush head also pops off, making it slightly shorter and easier to pack.
The Tide Pen has saved more outfits than I can count. Conference coffee. Airport ketchup. Mystery stains that somehow appear out of nowhere. It’s earned its permanent spot.
And then there’s ReWear spray, which is one of those products people don’t think about until they need it. When you’re traveling for several days and living out of a suitcase, being able to freshen up clothing between wears can be surprisingly useful.
Bottom Compartment: Makeup Must-Haves
I don’t pack a full makeup collection when I travel.
I pack the products that consistently work.
These aren’t necessarily the most expensive products I own. They’re simply the products that have earned permanent space in my bag because they help me look polished without taking up much room.
If I had to choose one product that makes me look more awake after an early flight, this would probably be it.
I wear it under tinted SPF to give me that ‘lit from within’ glow.
This is one of my favorite travel products because it combines sun protection and light complexion coverage in a single step.
Anything that helps me get ready faster in a hotel room earns bonus points.
I’ve carried a travel-size version of this blush for years.
The color works with almost everything, and it adds just enough color to keep me from looking like I’ve been awake since four in the morning.
Quick. Easy. Effective.
Exactly what I want when I’m getting ready for a day of meetings.
Length without heavy clumping.
I’ve tried plenty of mascaras over the years, and I keep coming back to this one.
Hydration, a little color, and no mirror required.
Travel products that can multitask always earn extra credit.
The Unsung Hero
One of the least exciting things in my bag is also one of the items I use most: my little travel hairbrush.
It takes up almost no space, but it somehow ends up being useful on nearly every trip.
After a flight.
Before dinner.
After walking through a windy parking lot.
It’s one of those items I would absolutely notice if it wasn’t there.
The Real Secret
The products matter.
The bag matters.
But the real reason this system works is because it stays packed.
When I get home from a trip, I replace anything I’ve used, restock anything that’s running low, and put the bag back where it belongs.
That’s it.
No packing list.
No scrambling.
No standing in my bathroom the night before a flight wondering whether I remembered toothpaste.
After years of flying, I’ve found that the simplest systems are usually the ones that stick. -LME
