TSA Approved: The Travel Shoes I Actually Rewear

There are two types of travel shoes:

The ones that look good in the mirror… and the ones you actually reach for at 5:30 AM when you’re headed to the airport.

These are the pairs I consistently rewear because they work for real life travel — long terminals, delayed flights, walking after landing, conference schedules, and airport security that somehow always feels slower when you’re wearing the wrong shoes.

And after enough trips, I’ve realized something:

Some shoes somehow always become a TSA problem.

For me personally, heels through airport security have basically never worked. At this point, I don’t even attempt it anymore. If I need heels after I land, I wear one of my Rothy’s options through the airport and pack the heels separately in the bottom shoe compartment of my TUMI Contine Weekender overnight bag.

That setup has simplified my airport routine so much.

These are the shoes I keep rewearing because they make travel feel easier without sacrificing the overall outfit.

1. Onitsuka Tigers

These are one of my favorite options for long walking days, especially if I know I’ll be exploring once I land.

They’re lightweight, flexible, and easy to move in without looking overly athletic. I also love that they feel a little less expected than the typical airport sneaker.

The neutral colorway works especially well with:

  • trench coats

  • leggings

  • relaxed trousers

  • oversized button-downs

  • layered neutrals

They’ve become one of my favorite “all day city walking” shoes.

And importantly:
they’ve consistently been easy through TSA without becoming “the shoes that trigger the scanner.”

2. Adidas Sambas

At this point, Sambas have become a staple for a reason.

They somehow work with almost everything:

  • airport outfits

  • denim

  • monochromatic neutrals

  • oversized sweaters

  • casual conference travel

I especially love the black pair because they visually ground an outfit and make even very simple basics feel more intentional.

They’re also one of those rare shoes that manage to feel both casual and polished at the same time.

Airport approved. Easy through security.

3. Veja Sneakers

If you prefer a cleaner sneaker aesthetic, these are probably the most elevated-looking sneaker option in this lineup.

I especially like these with cream layers, neutral airport outfits, and long coats because they keep everything looking clean without feeling overly sporty.

They have a slightly more refined feel than a typical travel sneaker while still being practical enough for long transit days.

Simple, sleek, TSA-friendly.

4. Rothy’s Daily Flat

The Daily Flat is my “I still want to look put together” option.

These work especially well for:

  • shorter flights

  • conference travel

  • business casual trips

  • outfits where sneakers feel slightly too casual

They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and incredibly simple for airport security because there’s no bulky hardware or complicated construction.

No hardware. No hassle.

5. Rothy’s Point II

If I’m dressing a little nicer for travel, these are the pair I reach for.

The pointed toe instantly makes an outfit feel:

  • sharper

  • more intentional

  • more polished

I especially love these with:

  • tailored trousers

  • monochromatic layers

  • elevated airport outfits

  • conference travel looks

They’re the closest thing in this lineup to a true “quiet luxury” travel shoe.

And unlike many polished flats, they still work well for real movement throughout a long airport day.

What Actually Makes a Good Airport Shoe

For me, the best airport shoes need to do four things:

  • work through TSA without unnecessary hassle

  • survive long walking days

  • match multiple outfits

  • still feel polished after landing

Because realistically, most of us are not changing outfits the second we get off the plane.

The best airport outfits are the ones that still make sense after you land — comfortable enough for real travel days, polished enough that you never feel underdressed once the trip actually starts. -LME
