The Travel Checklist I Never Pack Without
I used to convince myself I would remember everything.
And to be fair, most of the time I did.
But every now and then I’d arrive at the airport and realize my portable charger was still plugged into the wall. Or I’d get to the hotel and discover I forgot something small that suddenly became very inconvenient.
None of these mistakes were catastrophic. They were just annoying.
After enough work trips, conferences, and vacations, I stopped relying on memory and started relying on a system.
I don’t use a complicated app. I don’t keep a color-coded spreadsheet. I don’t have a 200-item packing list.
Before every trip, I simply run through the same categories.
It’s quick. It’s easy. And it keeps me from forgetting the things that actually matter.
Travel Documents
This is the first category I check because it’s the category that can ruin a trip the fastest.
Identification.
Boarding passes.
Passport when I need one.
Hotel confirmations and any travel information I know I’ll want easy access to.
Conference information - ballroom name, schedule…
Years ago, I would leave these things scattered across emails, screenshots, and various corners of my bag. Now they all have a designated place before I leave the house.
When I’m standing in an airport security line, I don’t want to wonder where anything is.
Chargers & Tech
Technology has become one of the easiest things to forget because we use it right up until we leave.
Phone charger.
Laptop charger.
Portable battery.
Headphones.
Charging cables.
I’ve learned that if I wait until the morning of a flight, something inevitably gets left behind.
Now I gather all of my travel tech before travel day arrives and keep it together. When it’s time to pack, everything is already ready to go.
Airport Outfit
I make this decision before travel day.
Every single time.
I’ve never made a better clothing decision because I was standing in my closet at 2:00 a.m. for a 5 a.m. flight.
I know the types of outfits I like to fly in. Comfortable shoes. Layers. Pieces that look polished but still feel easy to wear for a long travel day.
The less I have to think about on travel morning, the better.
Carry-On Essentials
This is probably the category I care about most.
Suitcases can be delayed.
Flights can be rerouted.
Plans can change.
The things that stay with me need to cover the essentials.
For me, that means chargers, medications, headphones, travel documents, and the items I know I’ll reach for throughout the day.
Everything goes into the same bag.
Everything has a place.
Nothing gets tossed in at the last minute.
Why This Works
The biggest travel mistakes I’ve made were never caused by forgetting a sweater.
They happened because I forgot something small.
A charger.
A medication.
A document.
A pair of headphones.
The solution wasn’t creating a longer packing list.
It was creating a repeatable process.
That’s why I still use the same checklist before every trip.
Not because it’s complicated.
Because it isn’t.
When I run through the same categories every time, I spend less energy trying to remember things and more energy focusing on the trip itself.
And that’s really the goal.
Not packing perfectly.
Just leaving the house confident that the things that matter are already taken care of. -LME
