The Storm Supplies I Hope I Never Need

One of the first things I noticed after moving to the coast wasn't the beaches.

It was how casually everyone talked about hurricane season.

Not because they weren't taking it seriously.

Because they'd already prepared.

No frantic trips to the store.

No searching for bottled water.

No wondering whether the batteries were still good.

Their supplies were already on the shelf.

I've slowly adopted that mindset myself.

I don't wait until there's a cone on the weather map.

By then, everyone is trying to buy the exact same things.

I'd much rather spend one quiet afternoon getting prepared before the season really begins than spend the days before a storm wondering what I forgot.

The goal isn't to prepare because you're afraid.

The goal is to prepare early enough that you don't have to be.

The Water I Store First

If you've ever walked into a grocery store the day before a storm, you've probably seen the bottled water aisle.

Empty.

I'd rather never experience that again.

Instead of relying entirely on bottled water, I keep collapsible water storage cubes with built-in spigots tucked away until they're needed.

They fold almost completely flat for storage, hold a surprising amount of water once they're filled, and make pouring water incredibly easy.

Hopefully, they spend most of their life empty on the shelf.

That's exactly what I want.

The Bathtub Backup Plan

This was one of those products I had never heard of until I moved to the coast.

An Aquapod is a food-safe liner that sits inside your bathtub.

Before a storm arrives, you fill it with clean water.

Suddenly, you have dozens of gallons available for flushing toilets, washing hands, or any of the countless things we normally take for granted.

It's one of those products that seems unnecessary...

Until the day it isn't.

The Lights I Can Trust

When the power goes out, I don't want to be searching for flashlights.

I want light.

Real light.

That's why I keep rechargeable LED camping lanterns ready to go.

They light an entire room instead of a narrow flashlight beam, they're easy to carry wherever they're needed, and they make the house feel surprisingly normal if the lights stay out after dark.

Sometimes comfort isn't about luxury.

It's simply about being able to see.

The Radio That Doesn't Need Power

Phones are incredible.

Until they aren't.

If the power is out long enough or cell service becomes unreliable, I still want another way to receive weather updates.

That's why I keep the Midland ER310 Emergency Crank Radio on the shelf.

It can run on rechargeable batteries, solar power, or a hand crank.

Hopefully, I never need any of those backup options.

But I like knowing they're there.

The Thing That Keeps Everything Powered

If I had to recommend one investment from this entire list, it would probably be a portable power station.

I don't own a Jackery because I expect to lose power.

I own it because I don't want to worry about what happens if I do.

It's not there to power the entire house.

It's there to keep the important things running.

Phones.

Laptops.

Small electronics.

The things that help life keep moving while everything else is temporarily standing still.

Just seeing it sitting on the shelf gives me a little more peace of mind than I probably expected. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it if the power is out for a few days? Absolutely.

The Backup I Keep Just in Case

I also keep a clear storage tote filled with long-burning emergency candles.

Hopefully they never leave that tote.

If they sit there untouched for the next ten years...

I'll be thrilled.

But they're inexpensive, easy to store, and one more layer of backup if I ever need them.

Preparedness isn't about expecting the worst.

It's about giving yourself options.

Preparedness Buys Peace of Mind

Moving to the coast taught me something I didn't expect.

Preparedness isn't about expecting the worst.

It's about removing one more thing to worry about.

Once these supplies are on the shelf, I stop thinking about them.

And honestly...

That's exactly the point.

When a storm shows up in the forecast, I don't have to rush from store to store hoping someone still has water or batteries left.

I simply check the forecast.

Charge the Jackery.

Fill the water containers if it looks like they're needed.

And then go back to living my life.

Because the best emergency supplies aren't the ones you use.

They're the ones that quietly wait on a shelf...
