The Pieces I'm Wearing Less (and What I'm Reaching for Instead)

Every August, I notice the same thing.

Nothing dramatic changes in my closet. I don't suddenly pack away all my summer clothes or decide it's time for a completely different wardrobe. Instead, I start reaching for slightly different versions of the pieces I already love.

One morning it's a long sleeve instead of a short sleeve.

A week later it's boots instead of sneakers.

Then, almost without realizing it, my closet has quietly shifted into fall.

That's one of my favorite things about building an intentional wardrobe. Seasonal dressing doesn't usually require buying an entirely new closet—it often looks more like making quieter choices.

Here are the ones I've found myself making lately.

Short Sleeves → Long Sleeves

I still love my Trendy Queen short-sleeve tees.

In fact, I'll keep wearing them well into the year. They simply haven't been the first shirts I've grabbed lately.

Somewhere between airport terminals, conference rooms, restaurants that always seem to keep the air conditioning a little too high, and cooler mornings at home, I realized I wasn't packing the short-sleeve version anymore.

Instead, I kept reaching for the long-sleeve tee.

It's the exact same effortless silhouette I already loved—just one that's a little more comfortable for the season I'm actually living in.

Capri Leggings → 7/8 Leggings

I still wear my ODODOS capri leggings.

They've been one of my favorite casual basics for years.

But lately, the Spanx 7/8 leggings have quietly taken over.

The extra length simply works better this time of year. They pair more naturally with lightweight sweaters, jackets, and boots while still being just as comfortable for long travel days.

They're also the same leggings I featured in Fall Travel Pieces That Earned Permanent Status, because they continue solving exactly the same problem—they're comfortable enough for travel but polished enough to wear almost anywhere.

That's become one of the biggest filters in my closet.

If a piece can do more than one job, I tend to reach for it more often.

Cashmere Tee → Cashmere Sweater

This was probably the most predictable change.

My Quince cashmere tee is still one of my favorite basics.

But somewhere over the last few weeks, I realized I hadn't packed it on my last couple of trips.

Instead, I kept reaching for the long-sleeve cashmere sweater.

Not because I suddenly needed heavy layers.

Just because an extra sleeve made airport mornings, conference rooms, and evening dinners noticeably more comfortable.

Sometimes seasonal dressing isn't about adding bulk.

It's simply about adding one more sleeve.

V-Neck Tanks → Crewneck Sweaters

Throughout the summer, simple Amazon V-neck tanks became one of the easiest things in my closet.

Throw one on with denim, shorts, or a skirt and the outfit was done.

Now, I've found myself naturally reaching for lightweight crewneck sweaters instead.

They create the same effortless feeling while making an outfit look a little more finished.

I don't have to wonder if I'll want another layer later.

The sweater is already doing the work.

Again, it's not a completely different outfit.

It's just the version that makes a little more sense right now.

White Sneakers → Chelsea Boots

I still love my white Veja sneakers.

They're not leaving my closet anytime soon.

But they've quietly stopped being the first shoes I grab.

Instead, I've been reaching for my Sorel Chelsea boots almost automatically.

They instantly make jeans feel a little more polished.

They balance sweaters better.

They work just as well for travel as they do for dinner afterward.

It's a small change that somehow makes almost every outfit feel more intentional.

What My Closet Taught Me This Fall

Looking back over these swaps, I realized something.

I wasn't trying to build a fall wardrobe.

I wasn't following trends.

I wasn't shopping for an entirely new season.

I simply kept reaching for different hangers.

One extra sleeve.

Slightly longer leggings.

Boots instead of sneakers.

A sweater instead of a tank.

Those tiny decisions quietly changed the way my wardrobe looked without changing the foundation of it at all.

That's one of the biggest lessons I've learned about building an intentional closet.

The goal isn't to own more clothes every season.

It's to own pieces that naturally become the right choice as your life—and the weather—changes.

The best wardrobes don't reinvent themselves four times a year.

They evolve almost without you noticing.

And when I looked back at what I'd actually been wearing over the last few weeks, that's exactly what had happened.

I hadn't rebuilt my wardrobe.

I had simply started reaching for different pieces. -LME
