The Airport Outfit I Wore to Land in Birmingham
I didn't pack this outfit because it looked good.
I packed it because I already knew what Birmingham was going to ask of it.
A freezing airport.
An over-air-conditioned plane.
An August afternoon in Alabama.
A hotel check-in.
Dinner on my own later that evening.
I wasn't packing for one moment.
I was packing for the entire day.
That's become one of the biggest shifts in how I think about business travel. I don't build airport outfits around the flight anymore.
I build them around everything that comes after it.
The best airport outfits aren't the ones that photograph the best.
They're the ones you completely forget you're wearing.
This one did exactly that.
The Layer That Stayed On
Years ago, I always dressed for my destination.
Now I dress for the airport.
Those are almost never the same temperature.
Even in August, airports and airplanes seem determined to feel like the middle of winter. That's why I almost always bring one lightweight layer that I know I'll actually wear instead of stuffing into my tote five minutes after I leave home.
This cardigan stayed on for the flight, kept me comfortable through the airport, and folded neatly into my bag the moment I stepped outside into the Alabama heat.
Exactly what I wanted.
The Leggings That Didn't Need Changing
One thing I've stopped doing is packing airport clothes that need to be changed the second I land.
If I have to rush back to the hotel before I can start my day, the outfit wasn't doing its job.
These cropped SPANX leggings worked from the moment I left home until dinner later that evening.
They're supportive enough for hours of sitting, polished enough for meetings, and the cropped length felt much more comfortable for Birmingham in August than full-length leggings would have.
One less outfit change.
One less decision.
The Flats That Surprised Me
I'll admit it.
Leopard flats probably aren't the first airport shoe most people think about.
They weren't mine either.
But they've quietly become one of my favorite travel shoes.
These Rothy’s pointed flats breeze through security, comfortable enough for long walks between gates, and they add just enough personality to an outfit built around neutral basics.
Sometimes that's all an outfit really needs.
One interesting detail.
Everything else can stay simple.
The Piece I Always Bring
Every trip seems to have one room that's colder than it needs to be.
Sometimes it's the airport.
Sometimes it's the plane.
Sometimes it's the conference room.
Sometimes it's the restaurant.
I never know which one it'll be.
That's exactly why I almost always pack a lightweight travel scarf.
It takes up almost no space, weighs next to nothing, and somehow solves the temperature swings that seem to come with nearly every business trip.
It's one of those pieces I never regret bringing, even when I barely use it.
The Basic That Went With Everything
Every travel outfit needs one piece that quietly supports everything else.
For this trip, it was a simple white V-neck tank.
Nothing about it is particularly exciting.
That's exactly why it works.
It layers easily under a cardigan, balances the darker pieces in the outfit, and never competes for attention.
The best basics aren't usually the ones people notice.
They're the ones that quietly make everything else work.
Packing for the Entire Day
Looking back, I realized I wasn't really packing an outfit.
I was packing solutions.
One layer for cold airports.
One pair of leggings that didn't need changing.
One pair of flats I could actually walk in.
One scarf that handled every over-air-conditioned room.
One basic that worked underneath everything else.
That's become my favorite way to build travel outfits.
I don't ask myself,
"Does this look good?"
I ask,
"Will I still be happy wearing this twelve hours from now?"
I've found that question almost always leads to a better outfit.
Because the best travel clothes aren't the ones you spend the whole day adjusting.
They're the ones you stop thinking about altogether.
And when an outfit works from the first gate announcement until the moment I finally walk into my hotel, I know I packed exactly the right pieces. -LME
