The Pieces I Bought Again in Another Color

Buying one is easy.

Buying the exact same thing again is a much bigger decision.

When I buy another color, it's usually because something happened.

I kept reaching for it.

I kept washing it.

I found myself wishing it was clean so I could wear it again.

Eventually, buying another color becomes less about shopping...

...and more about making sure my favorite pieces are always available.

These are the clothes that earned that second purchase.

The Tee I Buy on Repeat

There are a lot of basic T-shirts out there.

I've tried plenty of them.

But my Trendy Queen crewneck tees quietly became the foundation of my wardrobe.

I own them in both short sleeves and long sleeves because they solve different problems while feeling exactly the same.

The short sleeves carry me through spring, summer, and travel.

The long sleeves take over the moment mornings start getting cooler.

They're fitted without feeling tight.

Smooth enough to layer.

Substantial enough to wear by themselves.

Most importantly...

They disappear into whatever outfit I'm putting together.

I've also learned not to pay full price.

Amazon discounts these tees surprisingly often, and if I see the white or black versions drop to $5.99, $6.99, or $7.99, I don't even hesitate anymore.

They usually end up in my cart.

I know exactly how often I'm going to wear them.

When you find a wardrobe basic that fits exactly the way you want—and costs less than lunch when it's on sale—buying another one isn't impulse shopping.

It's just being prepared.

The Tank I Layer Under Everything

My CRZ Yoga tanks have a very different job than my workout tops.

I actually own quite a few of CRZ Yoga's ribbed athletic tanks, and I love them for workouts.

These aren't those.

These have a smoother finish that looks noticeably more polished and less sporty.

They're what I reach for when I'm wearing flowy linen pants, my Halara wide-leg pants, or skirts and I want the top half of my outfit to have a cleaner, more streamlined silhouette.

I've dressed them up.

I've dressed them down.

I've layered them under blazers and sweaters where they'll still be visible, and because they aren't ribbed, they always look a little more refined.

They're one of those quiet wardrobe pieces that make dozens of other outfits work better.

When that happens...

Buying another color becomes an easy decision.

The Leggings That Never Stay in the Drawer

I've talked about my SPANX leggings before.

These aren't those.

My ODODOS leggings have an entirely different role.

These are my work-from-home leggings.

Weekend leggings.

Dog-walking leggings.

"I don't really have anywhere to be today" leggings.

They're not trying to look elevated.

They're simply incredibly comfortable.

The pockets are genuinely useful, they've held up beautifully through countless washes, and when one pair is in the laundry...

I don't want to be without them. The 7/8 length is perfect for cooler weather, too.

That's exactly how I ended up owning them in more than one color.

The Sweater I Keep Reaching For

If you looked inside my closet during the week, you'd probably think I have a surprisingly strong opinion about Amazon Essentials crewneck sweaters.

You'd be right.

They're my work-from-home sweaters.

The ones I throw on when the house feels a little chilly but I don't want to look like I'm wearing a sweatshirt.

They're classic.

They're comfortable.

They're reasonably priced.

And they go with just about everything I own.

I've learned to watch for sales because, just like my favorite tees, another color always seems worth adding.

Not because I'm chasing something new.

Because I already know this sweater works.

I never have to wonder whether it'll look good with jeans, leggings, or casual pants.

It always does.

That's become one of my favorite qualities in everyday clothes.

The Quarter Zip I Bought Before I Needed It

This might be the best example in the entire article.

I hadn't even worn my first Dokotoo cable-knit quarter zip through an entire season before I bought another color.

That almost never happens.

But I already knew what was coming.

Cooler mornings.

Working from home with a cup of coffee.

A sweater that's warm enough to be comfortable without making me feel bundled up all day.

The cable knit gives it a timeless look, while the quarter zip keeps it relaxed enough for everyday life.

If the house is cool enough that I need a sweater, this is usually the first one I reach for.

It's just as comfortable on a Zoom call as it is curled up on the couch with a book.

Sometimes you buy another color because something wore out.

Sometimes you buy another color because you already know you're going to wear it constantly.

This was definitely the second one.

The Clothes That Earn Another Hanger

Looking at these pieces together, I realized something.

None of them are statement pieces.

None of them are the clothes people usually compliment first.

They're simply the clothes that quietly make up most of my week.

The ones I wear while working.

Traveling.

Running errands.

Relaxing at home.

Those are the pieces that deserve my wardrobe budget.

Not because they're exciting.

Because they've already proven themselves.

I've realized I don't get excited about owning more clothes anymore.

I get excited when I find one that's good enough to deserve another color.

I've stopped chasing new favorites.

I'd rather own another color of the ones that have already earned my trust.

And honestly...

It's made getting dressed a whole lot easier. -LME
