The beauty industry is really good at convincing us the next product will be even better.
A new ingredient.
A prettier bottle.
A viral trend.
A promise that this one finally does what the last one didn't.
I've bought plenty of products because I was curious.
I've bought far fewer a second time.
To me, that's the real test.
Not whether I liked something the first week.
Whether I missed it enough to buy another bottle after it was gone.
These are the products that earned another place on my bathroom counter.
The Products I Reach For Before Makeup
A little while ago, I wrote an entire article about why the Medicube Triple Collagen Toner and Triple Collagen Serum had earned a permanent place in my routine. I even dug into the ingredient lists because I wanted to know whether they were genuinely well formulated or simply another viral skincare trend.
Months later...
I'm still using them every single morning.
That's probably the better review.
Every morning starts the same way.
Toner.
Then serum.
Within a minute or two, my skin looks noticeably more hydrated—almost like it woke up before I did.
That healthy, moisturized look is one of the biggest reasons they've stayed in my routine.
I notice it before I even put on makeup.
My skin looks smoother.
More hydrated.
Just... healthier.
On the evenings I'm not using prescription tretinoin, these are usually the products I reach for before bed as well.
I still appreciate the ingredient lists because they're built around ingredients that actually make sense for hydration rather than relying on marketing buzzwords.
I also still think they're surprisingly affordable for how well they've performed.
I had every opportunity to replace them with something new.
Instead...
I bought another bottle.
The Exfoliant I Haven't Replaced
I've tried a lot of exfoliants.
This is the one I continue coming back to.
The ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Polish has become my reset button.
I use it about twice a week—usually on mornings when I'm not using my e.l.f. peeling treatment—and every single time my skin reminds me why I keep buying it.
The magnesium crystals are incredibly fine, so you don't need much. Which is also great because it isn’t the cheapest - but I truly think it’s one of the best I’ve come across.
Afterward, my skin feels smoother.
Looks brighter.
Foundation goes on better.
Even the rest of my skincare seems to absorb differently.
The jar lasts much longer than you'd expect because such a small amount does the job.
Every time I finish one, I think the same thing.
"Order another."
The Product That Fixes Tretinoin Mornings
My e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Gentle Peeling Exfoliant has a very specific job.
It isn't replacing the ZO polish.
It's solving a completely different problem.
The mornings after I use prescription tretinoin, my skin sometimes needs a little help letting go of the dry, flaky skin that comes with it.
That's exactly what this product does.
It's gentle enough that I can use it regularly, but effective enough that my skin immediately looks smoother afterward.
Instead of feeling like I'm scrubbing my face, it simply helps everything look more even again.
For the price...
I'm not sure I've found anything that does this job better.
The Least Glamorous MVP
Let's be honest.
Vaseline is never going to win a beauty award for packaging.
No one's filming aesthetic bathroom videos because they can't wait to show off a giant tub of petroleum jelly.
Mine has never left the counter.
Years ago, I spent money on expensive overnight lip masks.
Now?
Most nights I reach for plain old Vaseline.
It works.
I'll also dab a tiny amount under my eyes before bed when my skin feels especially dry.
Nothing complicated.
Nothing trendy.
Just a product that's quietly outperformed things that cost twenty times as much.
Sometimes the least glamorous product in the room is the one I'd miss first.
The Product That Changed My Entire Routine
There's one more product that deserves mentioning.
Prescription tretinoin.
If you're already seeing a dermatologist—or even using a reputable telemedicine provider—and you have prescription coverage, it's worth asking whether tretinoin is an option for you.
I was genuinely surprised that mine costs less than many premium over-the-counter anti-aging products.
For me, it has become the foundation of my “three nights a week” nighttime routine.
The Medicube products take over on the nights I'm not using it.
The e.l.f. exfoliant makes the mornings afterward much easier.
Each product has a different job.
Together, they work better than any single product ever has.
The Products That Earn Another Spot
Looking back, I've realized the products I get excited about aren't always the ones I keep buying.
Those are two very different lists.
The products that survive my routine are the ones that solve the same problem over and over again.
One makes my skin look healthier before makeup.
One resets my skin twice a week.
One makes tretinoin mornings easier.
One has been sitting on bathroom counters for generations.
When these run out...
I don't start researching replacements.
I don't go looking for the next trend.
I simply order another one.
To me, that's the highest compliment any skincare product can earn.
Not that it impressed me once.
That I never wanted to replace it. -LME
