The Hotel-Room Setup I Do Before I'm Tired

Every work trip used to end the same way.

I'd walk into my hotel room, set my suitcase on the luggage rack...

...and tell myself I'd unpack after I sat down for "just a minute."

You already know how that ends.

The suitcase stays open.

The chargers stay buried.

Pajamas are still somewhere under tomorrow's outfit when it's finally time for bed.

And the next morning starts with me digging through my bag instead of getting ready.

Eventually, I realized I wasn't tired because I unpacked.

I was tired because I waited.

Now I have a simple setup that happens almost automatically the minute I walk into the room.

Because tired me never wants to do it later.

The Suitcase I Unpack First

The first thing I do is get my suitcase open and unpack the things I'll actually need.

Not everything.

Just the essentials.

Tomorrow's outfit comes out.

Pajamas go on the bed.

My toiletries head to the bathroom.

Anything I'll need before breakfast gets a home instead of staying buried in my suitcase.

I've found that unpacking just a handful of things immediately makes the room feel less like a temporary stop and more like somewhere I'm actually staying.

The Charging Station I Set Up Immediately

One of the first things I plug in is my charging station.

Laptop.

Phone.

Raycon Fitness Earbuds.

Everything starts charging before I even think about relaxing.

I've learned that nothing makes a rushed travel morning worse than realizing something never got plugged in the night before.

Setting it up first means I never have to think about it again.

The Things I Want Ready Before Bedtime

This might be the habit that makes the biggest difference.

Before I sit down, I make sure everything I'll want later is already waiting for me.

My bamboo pajama tank and bamboo briefs are folded on the bed.

My sleep mask is within reach.

The white noise machine is plugged in.

The portable kettle is on the nightstand, ready for tea or hot water whenever I want it.

Water is already beside the bed.

By the time I'm actually tired, everything is already where it belongs.

Future me is always grateful.

The Bathroom Routine That Happens First

The bathroom gets unpacked before I ever open my laptop.

Toiletries come out.

Skincare gets lined up in the order I'll use it.

Hair products get set on the counter.

Instead of digging through cosmetic bags the next morning, everything is already waiting exactly where I expect it to be.

It only takes a couple of minutes.

It saves me far more than that the next day.

The Morning I Prepare the Night Before

I've learned that smooth mornings usually start the night before.

My clothes are already hanging.

My coffee setup is ready.

Electronics are charging.

Water is beside the bed.

Everything I'll reach for first thing in the morning has already been taken care of.

When the alarm goes off, I don't have to make decisions.

I simply move through the routine.

One Less Thing to Think About

I've realized the best hotel routines aren't about being organized for the sake of being organized.

They're about removing little decisions after a long day of travel.

The room feels calmer.

Bedtime feels easier.

The morning starts with less scrambling.

And instead of spending the first hour in a hotel looking for chargers, pajamas, or tomorrow's outfit...

I get to enjoy the room I traveled all day to reach.

That's become one of my favorite travel systems.

Not because it's complicated.

Because once you do it a few times...

You stop thinking about it altogether. -LME
