The Football-Themed Conference Outfit That Worked Better Than I Expected
I've realized conference outfits have a very different job than office outfits.
They're expected to be professional.
Comfortable enough for twelve-hour days.
Polished enough to represent your company.
And somehow still feel like you.
That's a surprisingly difficult balance to get right.
For this conference, there was one more layer to think about.
Football season was just getting started, and the entire event leaned into it. The Run of Show stated “Theme: Football, Tailgating, Favorite Teams”.
Team conversations started before the first keynote, and everyone seemed to have an opinion.
As an Ohio State fan attending a conference in Alabama, I knew exactly where my loyalties were.
I just didn't want my outfit to do all the talking.
I've found that the most memorable conference outfits aren't the loudest ones.
They're the ones that feel like an authentic version of the person wearing them.
Looking back, I realized I wasn't trying to dress like an Ohio State fan.
I was trying to dress like myself, but with a nod to my Buckeyes.
The Pop of Scarlet
I didn't want to wear fan gear.
I wanted to wear something that felt like me.
Instead of reaching for logos, I let one color tell the story.
A scarlet tank as my base layer was enough to quietly acknowledge my favorite team without ever feeling like game-day attire.
And anyone who knew me wasn't surprised by the choice.
Sometimes one intentional color says far more than a logo ever could.
The Layer That Kept It Professional
Conference rooms always seem to be ten degrees colder than the hallway.
I've learned that lesson enough times to stop pretending otherwise.
A white blazer solved more than one problem.
It balanced the brighter top, kept the outfit conference-appropriate, and made the transition from networking breakfasts to afternoon sessions effortless.
Once it was on, I never thought about it again.
That's usually the sign of a good layer.
The Trousers That Worked All Day
Conference days are deceptively long.
You're walking between sessions.
Standing during networking breaks.
Sitting through presentations.
Then somehow finding yourself at dinner hours later without ever changing clothes.
That's why I almost always reach for trousers I already trust.
The less I think about what I'm wearing throughout the day, the more attention I can give to the conversations happening around me.
Comfort doesn't have to come at the expense of looking polished.
The Heels That Made It Fun
Everything else in the outfit was intentionally classic.
The shoes were where I let myself have a little fun.
The scarlet heels quietly tied the entire outfit together without competing with it.
I've learned that when everything else is simple, one interesting piece goes a long way.
You don't need five statement pieces.
You usually just need one. And I have so many pairs of these heels because they’re actually comfortable and can handle a 12-hour day.
The Little Detail That Started Some Good-Natured Ribbing
Most people noticed the scarlet.
Almost nobody noticed the earrings.
Until one person looked a little closer.
"Wait...are those Ohio State earrings?"
From there, the conversations took off.
A little teasing.
A little football debate.
A few comments about SEC country.
Exactly what you'd expect from a football-themed conference in Alabama.
They were small enough that they never became the focus of the outfit, but recognizable enough to start conversations with the people who understood exactly what they were looking at.
Honestly, they ended up being one of my favorite parts of the entire day.
Professional Doesn't Mean Personality-Free
Looking back, I realized this outfit wasn't memorable because it was colorful.
It was memorable because it felt intentional.
Every piece had a job.
The blazer kept everything professional.
The trousers stayed comfortable from the first session until the last conversation.
The scarlet added a little personality.
The earrings quietly told the rest of the story.
I've learned that professional style doesn't have to erase who you are.
In fact, I think the best conference outfits leave just enough room for people to discover a little something about you.
Not because you're trying to stand out.
But because you're comfortable enough to let your personality show up in small, thoughtful ways.
Sometimes that's one color.
Sometimes it's a favorite pair of earrings.
And sometimes, it's those tiny details that people remember long after the conference is over. -LME
