Real Life Reviews: The TUMI Bags That Replaced Everything Else
There was a time when I was constantly buying travel bags.
Not because I loved shopping for them.
Because I was convinced the next one would finally get everything right.
A new tote.
A new weekender.
A different brand.
Every time I'd tell myself, This one looks perfect.
Every time I'd eventually find something that drove me crazy.
The straps weren't comfortable.
The organization didn't make sense.
The bag collapsed into itself.
Or it simply didn't hold up to the amount of travel I put it through.
Then something funny started happening.
Every time I started flying for work, I'd notice people carrying TUMI.
Eventually curiosity got the better of me.
During one layover in Atlanta, I wandered into the TUMI store just to see what all the fuss was about.
I'll admit it.
The price tags surprised me.
Then I picked one up.
The quality surprised me even more.
Within about thirty seconds, I understood exactly why they cost what they do.
I didn't buy one that day.
But I also couldn't stop thinking about them.
Eventually I decided to stop buying travel bags hoping I'd eventually find one that was "good enough."
Instead, I bought the ones I actually wanted.
I've never looked back.
The Valetta Quietly Became Part of My Routine
I originally bought the Valetta because I wanted something polished enough for business travel.
I didn't realize it would quietly replace every other tote I owned.
At this point, I don't really pack it anymore.
Everything simply stays in the tote.
Chargers.
Notebook.
Kindle.
Pens.
Business cards.
It has become part of my work routine instead of another bag I have to think about.
Between work and Looks More Expensive, I almost always travel with two laptops.
My work laptop.
My personal laptop.
That alone rules out a surprising number of travel totes.
The Valetta handles both without feeling overstuffed or losing its shape.
That's probably my favorite thing about it.
No matter how much I overload it—and I absolutely overload it—it still looks polished.
The ballistic nylon has been incredible.
I am not gentle with these bags.
They get shoved under airplane seats.
Dragged through airports.
Loaded into rental cars.
Carried through conferences.
Filled far heavier than they probably should be.
A year later, they still look remarkably good.
The black nylon paired with the gold hardware somehow manages to look elevated without feeling flashy.
That's exactly what I wanted.
One of my favorite details is also one of the smallest.
TUMI lets you personalize the luggage tags that come with the bags.
Having my initials embossed on both of them makes them feel just a little more personal.
It's a tiny detail.
But it's one I smile every time I pick them up.
The Under-the-Seat Test
There are two kinds of travel bags.
The ones that technically fit under an airplane seat...
And the ones that actually work once they're there.
The Valetta has become my personal item on almost every flight because it consistently slides under the seat in front of me while still letting me reach everything I need.
Headphones.
Kindle.
Chargers.
Laptop.
Water bottle.
Nothing gets buried.
Those little conveniences don't sound exciting.
Until you've repeated them hundreds of times.
The Contine Made Me Stop Looking at Other Weekenders
At first, I thought the Contine Weekender was simply a really nice duffel bag.
Then I started traveling with it.
The separate bottom compartment completely changed the way I pack.
Shoes stay separate.
Dirty laundry stays separate.
Nothing ends up touching clean clothes.
Then I discovered something I hadn't realized when I bought it.
If I don't need the shoe compartment for a particular trip, I simply unzip the divider.
Suddenly the entire weekender becomes one large packing space.
The first time I did it, I honestly wondered why every weekender isn't designed this way.
That flexibility has made it work equally well for overnight business trips, long weekends, and vacations where I simply wanted a little more room.
They've Been Through Real Life
One of the reasons I trust these bags so much is because they haven't been babied.
I honestly couldn't tell you how many flights they've been on anymore.
That's probably the point.
They've become so dependable that I simply stop thinking about them.
Before every trip, I grab the same two bags.
I know exactly what fits.
I know where everything goes.
I know they'll still look polished when I walk into a client meeting or hotel lobby.
That's something I never quite found with the bags I owned before.
Who I Think They're Actually For
These bags aren't inexpensive.
I don't think everyone needs them.
If you travel once or twice a year, I'd probably tell you to save your money.
But if you travel often enough that packing becomes part of your weekly routine...
I think they're much easier to justify.
I don't really think of them as expensive bags anymore.
I think of them as the bags I stopped replacing.
If TUMI Isn't in Your Budget
I don't think you have to spend TUMI money to travel well.
If you're looking for a weekender at a lower price point, I'd start with the Samsonite Better Than Basic Weekender.
For a travel tote, I think the Quince Voyage Nylon Travel Tote is one of the strongest alternatives I've found.
Neither one is trying to be a copy of TUMI.
But I think both deliver a lot of the same practicality for travelers who aren't ready to make that investment.
Why I Stopped Shopping for Travel Bags
I've realized that's become my favorite way to judge almost anything I buy.
Not whether I still like it.
Whether I stop looking for something better.
For years, I kept buying another bag hoping it would finally be the one.
Ironically...
Buying the expensive bags is what finally made me stop shopping for travel bags.
I don't compare them to new releases.
I don't wonder if another brand has something better.
Before every trip, I reach for the same two bags without thinking about it.
To me, that's the highest compliment I can give any travel product.
Not that I still love it.
That it quietly became part of my routine. -LME
