Pieces That Solved 90% of My Outfit Problems
For years, I thought I needed more clothes.
Another sweater.
Another pair of jeans.
Another outfit formula that promised to make getting dressed easier.
What I actually needed was a handful of pieces that solved the same problems over and over again.
Today, those pieces are my Sam Edelman heels, an ivory cashmere sweater, raw-hem wide-leg jeans, my black TUMI Valetta tote, and a camel wool coat. They aren't the only great pieces available, but they've each earned a permanent place in my closet because they consistently make getting dressed—and packing—easier.
More importantly, they each represent a wardrobe principle that changed the way I shop.
Instead of asking, "Do I like this?" I started asking, "What problem does this solve?"
That one question has quietly transformed almost everything in my closet.
1. Own One Pair of Heels That Instantly Elevates Everything
For years, I bought heels for specific occasions.
One pair for weddings.
Another for work.
Another because they were trendy.
Eventually, I realized I reached for the same pair almost every time.
For me, that's the Sam Edelman Hazel pumps.
They're comfortable enough that I don't spend the evening thinking about my feet, classic enough that they never feel dated, and available in neutral colors that work with almost everything I own.
They're the heels I'll wear to a conference presentation, a business dinner, a wedding, or even with jeans when I want a simple outfit to feel more polished.
The right pair of heels doesn't just complete an outfit.
It changes it.
That's why I no longer shop for occasion shoes—I invest in timeless shoes that earn their place over and over again.
2. Have One Elevated Knit That Makes Everything Feel Intentional
I don't buy sweaters because I need another sweater anymore.
I buy them if they make five other outfits easier.
That's why I reach for an ivory cashmere sweater so often.
It works with denim, trousers, skirts, blazers, coats, and sneakers. It travels beautifully, layers effortlessly, and instantly makes even simple outfits feel more polished.
If I have ten extra minutes in the morning, I'd rather spend them drinking my coffee than wondering whether a sweater works with the rest of my outfit.
The right knit removes that decision altogether.
3. Find One Pair of Jeans You Never Have to Second-Guess
We've all owned jeans that technically fit but somehow never became our favorite.
Too stiff.
Too trendy.
Too cropped.
Too uncomfortable for travel.
The pair I reach for most has a relaxed wide leg, a clean medium-dark wash, and a raw hem that feels current without trying too hard.
They're the jeans I'd wear to grab coffee downtown, board a flight, spend the afternoon shopping, or head out to dinner after checking into a hotel.
That's exactly what I want from a foundational piece.
I don't think about the jeans.
I think about where I'm going.
4. Carry One Bag That Works Everywhere
One of the biggest sources of outfit frustration used to be switching purses.
I'd move everything from one bag to another depending on whether I was traveling, working, or running errands.
Eventually, I realized I didn't need more bags.
I needed one better bag.
For me, that's my black TUMI Valetta tote.
It's structured enough for meetings, practical enough for flights, polished enough for dinner, and spacious enough for everything I actually carry.
When one bag works almost everywhere, leaving the house becomes surprisingly simple.
5. Always Have One Finishing Layer
Even if I don't end up wearing it all day, I almost always leave home with one finishing layer.
Usually it's a camel wool coat or a simple blazer.
Sometimes I need it because the weather changes.
Sometimes I never put it on.
Either way, I like knowing it's there.
It instantly elevates a basic outfit, gives me another styling option while traveling, and makes even jeans and a sweater feel more intentional.
I've found that one great layer does far more work than a closet full of trendy jackets.
The Real Change Wasn't the Clothes
None of these pieces are particularly flashy.
That's actually the point.
They've earned permanent space in my closet because they solve the same problems over and over again.
They make packing easier.
They make getting dressed faster.
They work together instead of competing with one another.
They help me buy less because they help me wear more.
That's become my favorite shopping filter:
What problem does this solve?
If I can't answer that question, it usually stays in the store.
If I can, there's a good chance it'll still be hanging in my closet years from now.
The Pieces Featured in This Post
These are the pieces I'm wearing today, but the bigger takeaway isn't the products themselves—it's the principles behind them. When you start building your wardrobe around solving recurring problems instead of chasing individual outfits, getting dressed becomes easier, your closet works harder, and every purchase has a purpose. -LME
