Not all at once.
That would be ridiculous.
But if you looked at every trip I take between October and March, you'd notice something.
Almost every jacket I pack comes from the same group of three.
Not because they're my only jackets.
Because each one has a very specific job.
Once I know what kind of trip I'm taking, the decision is almost automatic.
I'm not standing in my closet wondering which jacket matches my outfit.
I'm asking one question:
What job does this jacket need to do?
Once I answer that...
The jacket picks itself.
The One That Doesn't Look Like Outerwear
One of the biggest surprises about owning a really good black blazer is how quickly it stopped feeling like "work clothes."
This Quince scuba blazer comes on business trips.
Weekend trips.
Dinner reservations.
Flights.
It's simply the layer that makes almost everything underneath it look more intentional.
If I'm wearing jeans and a tee, the blazer immediately dresses it up.
If I'm heading to dinner somewhere nicer than expected, I already have the right layer.
If the temperature drops after sunset, it adds just enough warmth without feeling like I showed up wearing a jacket indoors.
If I want to make it look like a completely different outfit without packing another piece of clothing, I add a cashmere blazer insert.
That's why it earns suitcase space.
It isn't really outerwear.
It's the piece that quietly pulls everything else together.
The One I Pack When I Don't Trust the Forecast
This is where my Helly Hansen Crew Midlayer comes in.
I bought my first one on sale.
Then I started buying them whenever I found another color at a great price on Poshmark.
At some point my friends started joking that visiting my house meant choosing from my "jacket collection."
They're not wrong.
I now own enough colors that it's a little embarrassing.
There's a reason I kept buying them.
The Crew Midlayer somehow manages to sit right in the middle.
It's warm without feeling bulky.
It handles wind beautifully.
It shrugs off light rain.
And it layers easily over everything from a simple tee to a merino base layer.
Unlike many technical jackets, it doesn't make me feel like I'm dressed for an expedition when I'm simply walking to dinner or exploring a new city.
It's practical without looking overly technical.
That's a surprisingly difficult combination to find.
When I don't completely trust the weather forecast...
This is the jacket I pack.
The One for When It's Actually Cold
I've also stopped pretending layers solve every problem.
Sometimes...
It's just cold.
That's when I want a real winter coat. And my Helly Hansen Adore Parka does the job - and well.
Not because it matches every outfit.
Because the forecast has already made the decision for me.
This is the coat for below-freezing mornings.
Long walks outside.
Snow.
Wind that somehow makes 30 degrees feel even colder.
When I dedicate suitcase space to a winter coat, I want it doing the entire job.
Keeping my core warm.
Covering my hips.
Blocking the wind.
Leaving enough room underneath for a sweater or merino layer.
This isn't the coat I pack because I might need it.
It's the coat I pack because the weather has stopped negotiating.
Three Jackets. Three Jobs.
I've stopped trying to find the perfect travel jacket.
It doesn't exist.
Instead, I found three jackets that each solve a different problem.
The blazer handles polished.
The Helly Hansen Crew handles unpredictable.
The Adore parka handles genuinely cold.
Once those jobs are covered...
I'm done packing jackets.
The destination changes.
The forecast changes.
The formula doesn't.
That sounds almost too simple.
But it's completely changed the way I pack between October and March.
And maybe the best part?
It leaves room in my suitcase for everything else.
Because every piece I pack should earn its space.
That's become one of my favorite travel rules. -LME
