The Lightweight Layers I’ll Still Wear in September
September is one of the trickiest months to dress for.
The mornings are cool, the afternoons warm up, offices still feel like they’re set to winter, and airports somehow always manage to be chilly. Instead of buying a whole new wardrobe every fall, I keep reaching for the same lightweight layers that have already earned permanent space in my closet.
These are the pieces I still wear every September—and exactly why they continue to make getting dressed easier.
My Quince Cashmere Sweater
If I had to pick one layer that gets the most use this time of year, it would probably be myQuince Cashmere Sweater.
Most mornings it starts draped over my shoulders with a white T-shirt and wide-leg jeans. By the time I walk into a chilly office or board an airplane, I’m usually glad I brought it along.
It also folds beautifully into my TUMI Valetta Large Tote, so it travels with me almost everywhere. It’s one of those purchases that quietly proves its value year after year, and I never question whether it deserves space in my closet.
My Amazon Lightweight Sweater
Some days don’t call for cashmere, and that’s exactly why I keep this Amazon Lightweight Sweater around.
It’s become my “grab without thinking” sweater. It’s comfortable enough for working from home, polished enough for running errands afterward, and light enough that I never feel overdressed once the afternoon warms up.
It’s one of those basics that somehow ends up getting worn far more often than I expected.
My Neutral Cardigan
I forgot how useful a cardigan could be until I started wearing this one again.
This Grace Karin Cardigan usually lives on the back of my office chair during September because I seem to reach for it almost every day. Whether it’s a freezing conference room, dinner outside after sunset, or an unexpectedly cool morning, it’s the layer I throw on without giving it much thought.
And because it folds so small, it almost always ends up tucked into my tote “just in case.”
My Classic Blazer
I’ve talked about my Athleta MVP Blazer quite a bit over the past few months, and that’s because it genuinely earns its place.
It’s comfortable enough to wear through an entire travel day but polished enough that I can walk straight into a client meeting or business dinner. It’s also one of the reasons my conference packing formula works so well. One blazer completely changes the look of several outfits without taking up much room in a carry-on.
Whenever September arrives, it’s one of the first layers I start wearing again.
My Classic Denim Jacket
There are some wardrobe pieces that never really leave rotation, and my Liverpool denim jacket is definitely one of them.
I wear it over dresses, with wide-leg black pants, and even over simple T-shirts when I want an outfit to feel a little more finished. It’s casual without looking sloppy, and somehow it always seems to be exactly the right layer when the weather can’t decide what it’s doing.
That’s probably why I’ve never felt the need to replace it.
My Black Pashmina
If you’ve followed Looks More Expensive for a while, this one probably isn’t a surprise.
My black pashmina has traveled with me for years. It’s been an airplane blanket, an extra layer at dinner, a scarf, and occasionally even a pillow.
It’s one of the reasons it never leaves my carry-on, alongside the other essentials I shared in The Travel Accessories That Earned Permanent Space in My Carry-On. Every trip reminds me why I packed it in the first place.
Why These Layers Stay
One thing I noticed while putting this post together is that none of these pieces are really “September clothes.”
I wear them on cool spring mornings, summer evenings by the water, business trips throughout the year, and those unpredictable travel days where the temperature seems to change every few hours.
That’s become the way I shop now.
I’m much less interested in buying something because it’s trending for one season, and much more interested in buying pieces that continue proving their value year after year.
Every September reminds me that I don’t need a completely new wardrobe. I just need the right layers.
Those are the pieces that truly look more expensive—not because of the price tag, but because they’ve earned a permanent place in my closet. -LME
