The Home Changes I Make Every Fall (Without Buying Fall Decor)
I don't decorate for fall.
At least, not in the way most people think.
I don't pull bins of seasonal decorations out of the garage, spend a weekend swapping pillows, or feel the need to buy something new every September.
But if you walked into my house at the end of summer and came back a few weeks later, you'd probably tell me it felt completely different.
Not because the décor changed.
Because the way I live in it does.
Over the years, I've realized I don't really decorate for fall.
I simply change the way I live inside my home.
The shifts are small. Most of them happen without me even noticing. A blanket stays on the sofa instead of being folded away. My coffee nook becomes part of my morning again. The cabinet lights come on a little earlier each evening. Slippers quietly replace bare feet.
None of those things are dramatic on their own.
Together, they're what make my house feel like fall.
My Morning Coffee Finds Its Way Back
If you've read my post about my favorite coffee nook, you already know it's one of the places I enjoy most in my home.
During the summer, though, I don't always spend much time there.
The mornings move faster.
I'm outside earlier.
Errands start before the day gets too warm.
Then one morning, almost without realizing it, I'm sitting there again with a cup of coffee.
Nothing told me it was time.
I simply found myself slowing down enough to enjoy it again.
That's one of the first signs that a new season has arrived.
The Blanket Stops Getting Folded Away
There's always one evening when I notice I never folded my favorite wool throw blanket back up.
Not because I forgot.
Because I already know I'll be reaching for it again later.
It stays draped across the arm of the sofa instead of being tucked away.
I'll pull it over my legs while I answer a few emails, watch a show, or read for a while before bed.
I'm not styling the room.
I'm simply making it easier to enjoy.
And somehow, that one small change makes the whole living room feel warmer.
The Cabinet Lights Come On Earlier
This might be my favorite seasonal shift.
One evening, I find myself asking Alexa to turn on the LED above-cabinet lights before I even realize it's getting dark earlier again.
The room instantly changes.
Not because it's brighter.
Because it's softer.
Those warm lights bouncing off the kitchen make the entire first floor feel calmer as daylight starts disappearing a little sooner each evening.
Updating the schedule for those lights so they come on earlier is one of the easiest changes I make all year, yet it's probably the one that transforms the atmosphere the most.
The Slippers Quietly Return
There's always one morning when I stop walking around barefoot.
I never consciously decide it's time.
I just find myself reaching for my UGG slippers.
Then they quietly reclaim their familiar spot by my bed.
By the end of the week, they're the first thing I slip into when I wake up.
Again, it isn't really about the slippers.
It's about what they represent.
The rhythm of the house has changed.
The Moment I Know Summer Is Over
People often ask me when it finally starts feeling like fall.
For me, it isn't the calendar.
It isn't the weather forecast.
And it definitely isn't the first pumpkin I see in a store.
It's the evening when the cabinet lights are already glowing before dinner.
The blanket is waiting on the sofa.
My slippers are by the door.
Tomorrow morning's coffee is already something I'm looking forward to.
That's when I know.
Not because I decorated.
Because my routines quietly changed.
The Kind of Seasonal Decorating I Actually Believe In
Looking back, I realized almost none of my favorite seasonal changes involve buying something new.
They come from slowing down just enough to notice the little routines that quietly return every year.
A blanket that stays on the sofa.
A slower cup of coffee.
Cabinet lights glowing a little earlier.
Slippers waiting by the bed.
None of those things are decorations.
But together, they're exactly what make my house feel different.
That's become my favorite kind of seasonal decorating.
Not filling my home with more things.
Simply enjoying the things I already own in a slightly different way.
Because I've found that the most inviting homes rarely feel special because of what's sitting on the shelves.
They feel special because of the quiet routines happening inside them.
And every fall, those are the changes I find myself looking forward to the most. -LME
