The Fairmont Upgrades That Were Actually Worth It

Luxury hotels have become very good at selling upgrades.

A better room.

A private lounge.

Afternoon tea.

A spa.

On paper, they all sound worth the extra money.

But when I'm planning a vacation, I don't automatically say yes to every upgrade.

I usually ask myself one question.

Will this actually make the trip better...or simply more expensive?

Those aren't always the same thing.

As I planned our stay at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, I found myself making that decision over and over again.

These are the upgrades I chose.

And more importantly...

These are the ones I'd happily choose again.

Fairmont Gold Changed More Than the Room

I'll be honest.

At first, Fairmont Gold felt like the easiest upgrade to skip.

Breakfast is breakfast, right?

I was wrong.

Fairmont describes Gold as a "hotel within a hotel," and after learning everything it includes, I completely understood why.

The experience started before we even reached our room.

Instead of checking in at the main front desk, Gold guests have their own private check-in and dedicated concierge team.

From there, the rhythm of the entire stay changes.

Breakfast each morning.

A private lounge overlooking the mountains.

Coffee whenever you want it.

Afternoon snacks.

Evening canapés.

Desserts.

An honor bar.

None of those things, individually, justified the upgrade.

Together, they did.

It isn't really about the food.

It's about never feeling rushed.

Instead of immediately figuring out where to eat or standing in another line for coffee, every morning began quietly.

Coffee.

Mountains.

A plan for the day.

Then, after hiking or exploring, the lounge became somewhere to pause again before dinner instead of rushing straight to the next thing.

I've realized luxury often has less to do with having more...

...and much more to do with feeling less hurried.

That completely changed how I looked at the upgrade.

I Almost Skipped BASIN Glacial Waters

This was probably the experience I questioned the most.

Not because I thought it wouldn't be beautiful.

I just wasn't convinced another hotel spa could really be that different.

Then I learned BASIN isn't really a traditional spa.

It's a hydrothermal wellness experience.

Instead of simply booking a massage, the entire experience is built around moving through hot pools, cold pools, steam rooms, saunas, and quiet relaxation spaces at your own pace.

It's less about treatments.

More about slowing down.

Then I saw the outdoor pools overlooking Lake Louise.

That was the moment everything clicked.

This wasn't simply another hotel amenity.

It was something that simply couldn't exist anywhere else.

Warm water.

Cool mountain air.

Fire pits glowing around the pools.

Snow-covered peaks reflected across Lake Louise.

It’s one of those places where everyone eventually stopped talking—not because there was nothing to say, but because everyone was quietly taking in the view.

That's not really a spa.

That's an experience.

And to me, that's exactly the kind of upgrade worth paying for.

Not because it was luxurious.

Because it was unforgettable.

I Wasn't Sure Afternoon Tea Would Be Worth It

This was another experience I debated.

Because afternoon tea isn't inexpensive.

And if this were almost anywhere else...

I'm honestly not sure I'd book it.

But overlooking Lake Louise?

I think that's what changed everything.

You're not simply paying for tea and pastries.

You're paying for permission to slow down for a couple of hours somewhere you'll probably never forget.

Freshly baked scones.

Finger sandwiches.

Beautiful pastries.

Premium loose-leaf teas.

Optional Champagne.

Those are all wonderful.

But they aren't really why I'd choose it again.

The view was.

The pace was.

The experience was.

Slowing down for two hours became one of the most memorable parts of an entire vacation.

The View I Don't Think I'd Ever Get Used To

Some hotel views impress you once.

Then they quietly become part of the background.

I don't think Lake Louise works that way.

Morning light.

Afternoon reflections.

Evening colors.

Clouds drifting across Victoria Glacier.

Every time you looked outside, something changed.

I definitely spent more time looking out the window than looking at my phone.

And honestly...

That's probably the highest compliment I can give any destination.

The Little Details That Changed Everything

Looking back, I don't think what makes the Fairmont experience feel luxurious was one spectacular feature.

It's dozens of thoughtful little ones working together.

Fairmont Gold slowed down the mornings.

BASIN slowed down the afternoons.

Afternoon tea reminded me there's no reason to hurry through the day.

The view quietly stole your attention every time you walked past the window.

Individually, they were all wonderful experiences.

Together, they completely changed the rhythm of the trip.

And I've started noticing that's usually what luxury means to me.

Not excess.

Thoughtfulness.

What I'd Choose Again

Planning this trip reminded me of something I've been learning over the last few years.

The best travel purchases rarely give you more.

They help you enjoy what you're already there to experience.

If an upgrade simply costs more, I'm probably going to skip it.

But if it changes the pace of the trip...

Creates a memory...

Or helps me experience a place in a way I couldn't otherwise...

That's where I want to spend my vacation budget.

Looking back, I definitely won’t remember the room number.

I'll remember sitting in warm water while looking across Lake Louise.

I'll remember lingering over afternoon tea because there was nowhere else I'd rather be.

I'll remember beginning each morning somewhere quiet instead of rushing out the door.

Luxury isn't usually one spectacular moment.

It's dozens of thoughtful little ones.

And those are the upgrades I'd happily choose again. -LME
