The Conference Outfit I Packed for Des Moines
There’s a certain kind of conference outfit that works long before you ever step into the convention center. It’s polished without feeling overdone, comfortable enough for a full day on your feet, and refined enough to still look elevated by dinner afterward. This was the outfit I packed for Des Moines.
The entire look started with the satin blouse.
A draped satin top instantly changes the feel of an outfit in the best way. The soft sheen catches light beautifully, the structure feels sophisticated without being stiff, and it gives even the most practical pieces a much more elevated finish. It’s one of my favorite examples of how texture can make an outfit look far more expensive than it actually is.
I paired it with black ponte flare pants from Quince, which have become one of my favorite conference staples. They’re flattering, structured enough to feel professional, incredibly comfortable, and they travel exceptionally well. Ponte fabric is one of those quiet wardrobe essentials that rarely wrinkles, always looks polished, and somehow manages to feel comfortable through an entire day of meetings, networking, and standing at a booth.
And then there are the Sam Edelman Hazel pumps.
The Hazel pumps are one of the very few heels I continue reaching for year after year. I own multiple pairs because they strike such a rare balance between elegance and actual comfort. I can genuinely stand in them all day during conference events without regretting my shoe choice halfway through the afternoon. The snake print version I wore here is older and no longer available, but honestly, the specific pattern matters less than the silhouette itself. The shape is sleek, timeless, and incredibly versatile.
The jewelry finished the outfit without overwhelming it.
I’ve loved John Medeiros cuff bracelets for years. There’s something sculptural and refined about his pieces that instantly elevates an outfit while still feeling understated. Many people compare his designs to David Yurman — which makes sense, considering John Medeiros was once David Yurman’s apprentice. The craftsmanship and texture feel incredibly luxe, but at a much more approachable price point.
That combination of elevated textures, tailored basics, and thoughtful accessories is really the foundation of so many Looks More Expensive outfits.
Because conference style shouldn’t just photograph well. It should function beautifully in real life, too. -LME
