The Things I Reach for Before 8 AM

For a long time, I thought a "good morning routine" had to look productive.

Wake up earlier.

Exercise.

Journal.

Meditate.

Check off a list before the workday even started.

Mine doesn't look like that.

Most mornings, I'm simply sitting on my porch.

Coffee in one hand.

Water in the other.

A good book.

Ninja somewhere nearby.

The funny thing is...

I've realized I don't actually want my mornings to be more productive.

I want them to be harder to leave. That’s what happens when you move to a small coastal town.

Looking back, there are a handful of things that have quietly helped me create exactly that.

The Part of My Morning I Never Rush

I'm fully aware that coffee tastes the same regardless of the mug.

I don't care.

These oversized reactive-glaze stoneware mugs have become part of the ritual.

I originally bought them because I loved the handmade look. The reactive glaze gives each one its own character, and they're generously sized, which means I'm not heading back inside five minutes later for a refill.

They're the mugs I reach for every single morning.

Not because they're trendy.

Because they've become part of slowing down.

I've realized I don't really collect coffee mugs.

I collect little reasons to stay on the porch for another fifteen minutes.

The Drink That Keeps Me Outside Longer

If you know me, you know I double-fist my drinks.

Coffee in one hand.

Water in the other.

My BrüMate Era Flip 40-ounce has become the equivalent of an emotional support water bottle.

It follows me everywhere.

The porch.

My desk.

The golf cart.

The car.

I never have to think about whether I have enough water because it's already beside me.

It's one of those purchases I stopped noticing because it quietly became part of everyday life.

The Chapter Before My Emails

I love reading.

I just don't love owning hundreds of books I'll probably never read again.

My Kindle Paperwhite solved both problems.

Lately I've been getting incredible value from my Kindle Unlimited membership.

Just this past weekend, between boating and resetting my house for the week, I read Verity, The Silent Patient, and finally finished The Poisonwood Bible.

That's exactly why I love reading digitally.

Every book travels with me.

Every book is waiting when I have twenty spare minutes.

No overflowing bookshelves.

No stacks of paperbacks.

Just the stories.

Reading before I open my email has quietly become one of my favorite habits because it reminds me that my morning still belongs to me.

At least for a little while.

The Layer That Makes 60 Degrees Feel Perfect

My Trendy Queen quarter-zip probably gets more wear than almost anything else I own.

It's fleece-lined without feeling bulky.

Warm enough for cool mornings outside.

Comfortable enough that I barely notice I'm wearing it.

And polished enough that, more often than not, I simply keep it on when I walk inside and start my workday.

Sometimes the best pieces in your closet aren't the most exciting.

They're the ones that quietly make everyday life easier.

The Reason I Stay for One More Chapter

I don't like heavy blankets on the porch.

I want something that keeps me warm without feeling like I'm wrapped in winter bedding.

This sweatshirt blanket somehow manages both.

It's lightweight enough that I barely notice it.

Warm enough that I don't start thinking about going back inside.

I usually just pull it across my lap while I'm reading.

One chapter turns into two.

Coffee turns into another cup.

Before I know it, I've spent another half hour outside.

I don't think the blanket is really keeping me warm.

I think it's buying me a little more time.

The Best Mornings Aren't Always the Most Productive

They’re the ones you don’t want to end.

I've realized none of these things are particularly remarkable on their own.

A coffee mug.

A water bottle.

A Kindle.

A hoodie.

A blanket.

They're all ordinary.

Together, though...

they've created a morning I genuinely look forward to.

That's become surprisingly important.

Because I've found that when my day starts calmly...

it usually stays calmer.

I don't think I've built the perfect morning routine.

I think I've simply built one that makes me want to stay on the porch a little longer.

Coffee in one hand.

Water in the other.

A good book.

Ninja nearby.

And honestly...

I can't think of a better way to begin the day. -LME
